Other Characters in Game: Kiryu Kazuma | Tower
IC INFORMATION
Character Name: Dr. Jonathan Reid
Canon: Vampyr (video game)
Canon Point: Post-canon in the ‘no kill’ run scenario
Background: Here and here! The first link is a page where I go over the choices he made in game (since they can be different every playthrough) and the second is his general bio page on the canon wiki.
Suitability: Jon is a doer all the way; despite being from a rich family, he chose to go into medicine and despite being able to avoid service (in fact his mother wished he hadn’t gone) he enlisted to fight in the Great War and served as a medical officer in France at the front. He is chosen by a mystical spirit blood THING/progenitor of vampires (it’s weird) to be a Champion of his city/country and throughout the game, despite being angry about having his life essentially derailed and the whole thing causing his twin sister’s death, he never backs down or backs away from dealing with the situation at hand both medically and when it comes to getting into the middle of the action, working with people who are terrible or confusing or difficult in turn. It’s actually a game mechanic that it’s important to care for people in the various districts, their health and their emotional well being, so caring is really just… his thing. With the entire multiverse at stake (badum Ching), Jon would never do anything but step up. I also think, seeing how things are in the world he ends up in, he’s going to start trying to upgrade the level of medicine in this world and see THAT as an important concern. Medical is a pretty big deal when there's a war on and he's enlisted before.
Powers: here under abilities and also listed here for specific in game abilities.
PERSONALITY QUESTIONS
Describe an important event in your character's life and how it impacted them.
The death of his sister (at his own hand, at first by accident and then by intention) is probably one of the most impactful moments in his life. To explain: when he awoke from death as a vampire, the first living person he encountered was his sister and barely able to see her other than the blood in her veins and somewhat delirious, he bit her and drained her and only then recovered his senses. This first incident shaped his perception of what he is now, that it was ‘bought’ with his sister’s life, and it was this death that determined that he would never take another victim that was not already attempting to kill him. It also deeply darkened his rebirth, as it took away the person closest to him, the one he loved the dearest, and put her death in his hands, making him aware of how little power mortals have in supernatural affairs. This was only exacerbated when he discovered that the change had actually driven her mad, that the idea of feeding off of the living broke her, as he had accidentally turned his sister into a vampire when he fed on her. Having to fight her and then, by her own request, having to put her down, both deeply scarred him and gave him the resilience to go on, to find the reason all of this had happened, and to make it worth the suffering he and his family had endured.
Does your character have a moral code, or other set of standards they try to live by?
He absolutely does: do the least harm and the most good, and he 100% takes the Hippocratic oath and the rules of scientific ethics very VERY seriously. He also does not believe in killing someone unless they are outright trying to kill him first and will not start violence or aggression; in fact, he tries very very hard to settle things with words and reason and compassion if he possibly can. Even if someone is insulting him to his face, he’ll try to work with them, make them see reason. Even if someone is clearly a terrible person causing more harm than good in the community, he will not go the vigilante route and murder them, even if he sees no way out for them. He will not be judge, jury, and executioner, as it is against his code as a doctor and as he views it, as a man of reason. He will instead take it upon himself to try and cure the ills of their presence and choices and if necessary, involve the authorities. The man’s very lawful by nature and feels responsible about the consequences of his actions.
What quality or qualities do they admire most?
Intelligence, compassion, kindness, imagination, respect for one’s fellow men and women, forthrightness, and a willingness to risk your life to do what you believe is right. Those who always wish to add to the community and not take from it. We see in his love of Mary and Elisabeth how much he admires those who care, those who make it their purpose in life to care for others and see them cared for. His respect for his mother (a painter) and his sister, who would often play imaginative games and muse with him as they stared at the stars. The way he handles Sean, the preacher who tried to save the first big monster in the game; the man runs, essentially, a homeless shelter and he is SO much more gentle and concerned for him than you might expect given the almost suicidal things he does in pursuit of caring for others, but Jon helps him even while he’s frustrated by him. He obviously puts compassion over anything, as one of his biggest discussions he has with his fellow doctors and his hospital administrator is how to put the patient’s needs first, where is experimental work helpful and where is it putting your curiosity over your patient, etc. He does believe in innovation, in pushing the envelope, but never at the expense of others. When it comes to fighting, he does believe in courage and standing up for what you believe, because even though the vampire hunters of the game are honestly awful to him, he still works with them and tries to make them see that they’re on the same side. He even spares their leader after he attacks him to nail that point home (which is another of those compassion moments).
Do they have a part of themselves they dislike?
Reid feels things a lot and while he can be very good in a crisis when he knows what to do, he can fall into a depression and make poor choices. He even tried to kill himself after his first day as a vampire when he realized what had happened (aka having killed his twin sister). He's also sometimes too willing to risk his own life, too willing to push the envelope. During the war, he almost got himself and his assistant killed by insisting on finishing a procedure during an evacuation and he's voiced some frustration with himself on both those points. He occasionally feels like he lets his compassionate nature be taken advantage of as well.
What is their sign, and why? The EMPRESS - While he’s a vampire, Jon is primarily a doctor, and that flows through everything he does and every action he takes. He is someone who cares about the people around him and sees their care and well being as his primary concern. So much so that he regularly carries compounded medicines on hand and will just hand them out to people when he notices that they’re ill. And, honestly, when he fights and when he takes action, it’s always with an eye for the people around him. As much as he cares about scientific advancement, he’s very clear with his colleagues that his patient’s care and well being is his primary concern. Making medicine better is to HELP people and nothing else.
